The Avery Vikings baseball squad wouldn't let even Mother Nature interfere with its quest for a state title, as the team had to stay overnight at Highlands due to poor weather that postponed Friday's scheduled opening round playoff game. The team awakened Saturday morning for a 10 a.m. start, and dismantled the Highlands Highlanders 10-0 on the road in five innings.
It was a power parade for the Big Red during the win. Nine of Avery's 10 runs scored jogged across the home plate due to home runs. Chris Childress belted a leadoff home run in the rain on Friday, and picked up where he left off with a second home run and had 3 total RBI. Adam Pate blasted a pair of solo home runs for a pair of RBI, Jack Buchanan tallied an RBI, and Steven Daniels was a perfect 2 for 2 with a pair of home runs, two intentional walks, and 4 RBI.
We'll have much more on this story later today. Avery will travel to Murphy on Tuesday for a second round matchup against the Bulldogs, who defeated Cherokee 9-1 on Friday evening.
