Vikings Christen Turf with Four-Team Scrimmage

The Avery football team held a scrimmage on Tuesday evening, facing off with West Caldwell, Hampton (TN), and Morganton Draughn High Schools. Avery's offense scored on several occasions through the scrimmage, while the defense continues to build and focus on stopping the run and pass.

Avery methodically scored on its first drive against Hampton as Adam Pate dashed in for a nine-yard scoring run. The Vikings showed they could also effectively pass the football out of its spread atteck, connecting on a slant pass for a long touchdown on one drive against West Caldwell.

The Big Red continues practicing in anticipation of next Friday's regular season opener in Roan Mountain against Cloudland (TN) High School. Large crowds are expected at Orr Field next Friday night for the 2nd annual Avery Journal-Times Border Battle Classic. Avery captured the trophy last season in Newland with a 35-14 win, so the 'Landers will be seeking revenge on its newly renovated surface next week. A full preview of next week's game can be found in next week's edition of the Journal-Times.
