Vikings Win Big Over Blackhawks for First Victory of 2009

Lightning cut short last Friday night's varsity football game in Robbinsville, but it was the Avery offense that provided the sparks as the Vikings steamrolled past the West Wilkes Blackhawks 54-27 at Blackhawk Stadium in Miller's Creek Friday night.

Avery quarterback Alex Villanueva accounted for over 400 yards of total offense as Avery raced to a 14-0 lead. West cut the lead to as close as 21-20 in the second quarter, but Avery extended the advantage to 34-27 at halftime.

The second half story was the Avery defense, who held West scoreless and was a frequent visitor in the BlackHawk backfield, delivering shot after shot to West quarterback Logan Hallock. The Viking offense maintained momentum with 20 points in the second half to pull away for the squad's first victory of 2009.

JV Football Falls to West Wilkes

Avery JV football fell 26-8 to West Wilkes in JV action Thursday night at MacDonald Stadium. West grabbed a 6-0 edge, but a pair of additional quick scores in the second quarter extended the Blackhawks lead to 20-0 at halftime.

Avery got on the board midway through the third quarter on a Spencer Blackburn 17-yard touchdown jaunt, and also scored on the two-point conversion attempt, cutting the West lead to 20-8. West answered with a long scoring drive of its own to build its lead back to 18 at 26-8.

The game was called with 6:27 remaining in the fourth quarter as lightning was sighted by officials at the stadium. After a brief delay, the coaches from both teams agreed to end the game and shake hands.

Vikings Seek First Victory of 2009 against Black Hawks

Avery football hopes to move its ship in the right direction this Friday night when it travels to Miller’s Creek for a showdown with the West Wilkes Blackhawks. Avery is coming off a lightning-shortened 41-14 defeat at the hands of 1A power Robbinsville, while West Wilkes enters Friday’s matchup off a 24-20 loss at home to West Lincoln. The two teams last met in August, 2006, with Avery coming away with a 14-3 win in a defensive struggle.

Scouting the Blackhawks

The West Wilkes Blackhawks are members of the new split Mountain Valley Athletic 1A/2A Conference, and are coached by Scott Hallock. The second year coach took over for former head coach Tim Pruitt, who left Miller’s Creek to take the reins of the Watauga football program.

West had a hard time finding wins during the 2008 season, finishing with a record of 3-9 overall regular season record and losing in the first round of the 2008 football playoffs West Wilkes High School of Millers Creek struggled to find wins during the 2008 football season. The Blackhawks won only three games last year (one by forfeit) and were tromped in the first round the 1AA NCHSAA state playoffs 57-7 by Murphy High School.

On the field, West employs a Spread offense, and utilizes a 3-5 defense. Leading the team is the coach’s son, senior quarterback Logan Hallock (5’11”, 175 lbs.). "He's a passer that's a very good runner, not a good runner who's a passer," head coach Scott Hallock said during the preseason.

"For us to be successful, we have to play well up front and in the running game. We need our young receivers to step up." Hallock was also an All-Conference defensive player last season.

A favorite receiver for the younger Hallock in the team’s season-opener was Dalton Moore, but receiving teammates Andrew Adams and Scott Gamble are capable of making big catches for the club.

Up front, the Blackhawks rely on linemen Jacob Shepherd (5-9, 200 lbs.), Tommy Pruitt (6-0, 220 lbs.), Ethan Church (6-1, 215 lbs.) and Bryan Owens (6-0, 240 lbs.). With Hallock leading the team in rushing in the team’s season opener, finding additional help in the running game is a cause of concern for the club throughout the 2009 season.

"The linemen have to do real well for us to have a chance," Hallock said. "We've got to develop a running game. If we do that, we'll have a chance to compete; if we don't, it'll be a long year."

The Low Down

When Avery’s defense lines up against West Wilkes Friday night, the Vikings may wonder if they are looking into a mirror, as the Blackhawk Spread offense is akin to that of the Vikings. However, the West offense includes quarterback rollouts which allow Logan Hallock to find open space and utilize his above average running ability as he looks downfield to throw.

In last week’s loss to Robbinsville, it took the Vikings an entire half to remedy issues with its tackling and run defense. Hopefully those kinks have been ironed out, as Avery showed the ability to stop the run during the final quarter of last week’s loss.

West Lincoln
, the Blackhawks’ opponent last Friday, was part of the scrimmage held at Avery High School back on August 12th. Avery held its own against the Rebels, which should provide confidence to the young Vikings squad that they can hand West Wilkes a second straight defeat to start 2009.

Avery’s youthful team gained valued experience in last Friday’s opener, but the Big Red must put that experience to use this week. Two keys will determine who leaves Miller’s Creek with a “W” this weekend: Can the Vikings defense make tackles, as well as contain West quarterback Logan Hallock and limit his big-play ability (2 TD passes and a rushing TD in last week’s game), and can the Avery running game get on track (17 yards on 14 carries in last Friday’s loss).

By the Numbers:

2- West Lincoln players who rushed for over 100 yards in last week’s 24-20 win over West Wilkes.
9- returning starters for West Wilkes from last season’s 3-9 team.
14- passes completed by Avery sophomore QB Alex Villanueva for 239 yards and a touchdown in last week’s game at Robbinsville.
36- yard total of the touchdown run from West QB Logan Hallock in last week’s loss to West Lincoln.
239- rushing yards gained by Robbinsville in last week’s win over Avery.

Read next week’s Avery Journal-Times for a full recap of this week’s game with West Wilkes, as well as a preview of next week’s “Battle for the Bucket” against Watauga.

Vikings Drop Weather-Shortened Opener at Robbinsville

From the first play of Friday’s 2009 season-opener in Graham County, the Avery Vikings found themselves in an uphill climb against a talented Robbinsville Knights team. The Knights took a 14-0 lead only 89 seconds into the contest and used a strong rushing attack to hand Avery a 41-14 defeat in an abbreviated three quarters of action at Big Oaks Stadium.

Avery received the opening kickoff, but disaster struck on the first play from scrimmage, as Viking quarterback Alex Villanueva’s pass attempt was intercepted by linebacker Kurt Odom and returned 49 yards for a Robbinsville score. The PAT missed but Robbinsville led 6-0.

The Viking offense was held to three and out on its second possession, but Avery punter Dylan Aldridge was unable to avoid a swarm of Knights defenders as he attempted to kick and was tackled at the Avery 21 yard line.

Avery felt the loss of starting defensive end Colton Blackburn, who missed Friday’s game due to a groin injury. Robbinsville wasted no time in marching to the end zone for a second time, as quarterback Blake Anderson scurried 16 yards to paydirt. A two-point conversion run by Randy Hernandez spotted the Knights a 14-0 lead at the 10:31 mark of the first quarter.

Down but not out, the young Avery ballclub regrouped for its strongest offensive drive of the night, marching 76 yards on 11 plays, capped by a two-yard touchdown sneak on fourth and goal by Villanueva. The PAT was blocked but the Avery deficit was closed to 14-6.

Even without injured starting quarterback Luke Perkins, Robbinsville’s offense continued to display quick-strike ability. Kurt Odom struck for his second touchdown of the game as he dashed 49 yards through the Viking defense. The two-point conversion was good and the Knights found themselves ahead 22-6 at the 3:30 mark of the opening period.

In need of momentum, Avery looked to go three-and-out, but a roughing the passer penalty gave Avery a first down near midfield. A connection from Villanueva to wide receiver Samson Jennings moved the chains inside the Knights 40, but the drive stalled and Avery turned the ball over on downs following a fourth down incompletion.

As the second quarter began the Knights continued to utilize the running game. A 62-yard scoring drive was completed when Odom scored for a third time, this time a three-yard jaunt to spot Robbinsville a 28-6 lead.

Villanueva tossed a second interception on Avery’s next drive, but Avery defensive back Trent Mitchell picked off Knights QB Anderson on the next play from scrimmage to get the ball back for the Vikings. Avery was pinned deep in its own territory thanks to a pair of penalties, but made it up in a flash when Villanueva hit an open wide receiver Andy Gonzalez down the Avery sideline for a 95-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion run was successful to narrow the gap to 28-14 with 9:37 left before halftime.

On its ensuing possession, Robbinsville drove 68 yards on seven plays (all rushes) that ate up just under three minutes of the clock, capping the drive with a Taylor Wachacha three-yard blast across the goal line. The PAT was successful, giving Robbinsville the 35-14 that was carried into halftime.

As the third quarter began Robbinsville put the exclamation point on the contest with a five-play drive finished by Odom who scampered for a 47 yard touchdown and a 41-14 advantage.
Avery drove the ball near midfield with its ensuing possession, but the Knights defense remained stern and forced a punt. Robbinsville then held possession of the football for over five minutes, but were unable to get inside the Avery 30 yard line. A failed fourth down play gave the Vikings possession of the ball with under a minute remaining. The quarter ended with Avery facing a third down and one yard to go inside Robbinsville territory.

Between quarters officials witnessed lightning in the vicinity and instructed players and coaches to clear the field. After a lengthy lightning delay, the teams agreed to call the game as final and shook hands.

“I felt like we pass blocked well and that there were a lot of positives coming out of Friday. We took a young group of players, and I felt like we won the third quarter after we straightened out an alignment on defense and looked fresher than they were,” Avery head coach Darrell Brewer said after the game. “After the first two scores to begin the game, our kids had every opportunity to hang their heads and say “here we go again”, but they didn’t, and that’s why I left Robbinsville feeling good about our team.”

Avery quarterback Alex Villanueva was 14 of 32 for 239 yards and a touchdown. Kurt Odom led Robbinsville with 178 yards rushing and four touchdowns overall (three rushing).

“Alex impressed me with his toughness. He took a couple of good shots and gave a pretty good one after throwing an interception,” Coach Brewer added. “He made some mistakes, but he also made some great decisions too. I think the more he plays the more good decisions he’ll make, and I’m tickled to death with his performance.”

An abbreviated game was a first for the Vikings in recent memory, and the weather posed a difficult scenario when the coaching staff had to evaluate.

“I hated that we weren’t able to finish the game, but after having to wait as long as we did with the lightning strikes, we had to consider the players and how they weren’t warmed up,” Coach Brewer added. “I’ve never had to deal with that before, but I felt we were starting to come together and build momentum when the game was called. Nevertheless we came away healthy from the game, which was different from last year’s game.”

Avery goes back on the road to Miller’s Creek this week when they battle West Wilkes, who lost 24-20 to West Lincoln last week. A full recap of the West game can be found in next week’s edition of the Journal-Times, as well as here on the Blog.

Avery Soccer Kicks Off Season with Consecutive Road Victories

Last week the Avery boys soccer team picked up a pair of victories to open the 2009 regular season schedule.

On Wednesday, August 19th the Big Red went on the road to take on Chase High School and came away with a hard fought 2-0 win behind a pair of goals from senior Kyle Griewisch.

The head coach from both teams met and agreed to shorten the game to only 30 minutes per half after lightning forced a delay at the 30-minute mark with the game scoreless.

Avery regrouped at intermission and played inspired soccer in the second stanza. Viking senior Kyle Griewisch kicked the offense into gear and tallied a pair of goals within a seven-minute stretch for what proved to be the only goals of the match.

“We felt really good about how well we played at the Jamboree and felt we’d take that with us to Chase. Unfortunately for the first 30 minutes at Chase we just weren’t doing anything right. Chase was coming at us hard,” Vikings head coach Tom Evaul said following the match. “We regrouped during the weather delay and the guys looked like a totally different team in the second half.”

Avery’s defense was strong and senior keeper Morgan Bounds made multiple extraordinary stops in goal to record his first shut out of the season. “I was proud of how our guys came back and did what they needed to do in the second half to get the win,” the coach added.

Less than 24 hours after the trip to play Chase, Avery again boarded a bus, this time to take on the Knights of North Henderson High School. The Vikings began the North match crisper than the previous day. In the first seven minutes of the opening half, the Big Red had put a pair of shots off the foot of Kyle Griewisch into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

Inclement weather again reared its ugly head at North Henderson, forcing Avery to halt play temporarily for a second consecutive match. Following the intermission the Knights rallied and cut into the Avery lead, netting a goal to cut the North deficit to 2-1. “I told the guys during the delay that North will want to come out and do to us the same thing that we did to Chase, and that we needed to regroup and be ready for their intensity,” Coach Evaul said.

Avery suffered a potentially major setback during first half action as senior stalwart Daniel Huff suffered a leg injury and left for the remainder of the game. “Losing Daniel was a big blow for us,” Coach Evaul explained. “Daniel is the backbone of our defense and we had to do some scrambling and changing of positions which threw our chemistry off.”

The Vikings managed to pick up an insurance goal as Isauro Estrada took a pass from Griewisch and scored his first goal of the season for a 3-1 Viking lead. North answered quickly with a second goal to get back within one at 3-2, but Morgan Bounds played an exceptional game in goal, stopping numerous North shot attempts and preserving the win.

“Considering that we were playing three starters down, our guys played scappy and were aggressive. Everybody was going at it hard and to the best of their ability, and we were fortunate to be able to hold them off,” Coach Evaul said. “Our two guys up front were able to beat the defense with their speed and the team has done a good job in placing the ball to them so they can outrun the defense.

Avery's lone game this week is a match at West Henderson on Tuesday, Aug. 25th.
