Highlander Gameday: Doubleheader Highlights Evening of Regional Finals action

The Cloudland Highlander boys and girls teams are in action this evening at Chuckey Doak High School in Regional Championship action. The Cloudland Lady Landers will square off for the fourth time this season with the county rival Hampton Lady Bulldogs for the brass ring, while the Cloudland boys will tangle with the Buccaneers of University High in the boys title contest.
We'll be bringing you updates from tonight's contest LIVE throughout the evening as we follow the action from Chuckey-Doak High School.

7:55 PM - A great crowd from Carter County and beyond showed up at Chuckey-Doak High School for this evening's regional championship game between Hampton and Cloudland's girls squads. Cloudland came out strong to start the game, taking a 17-11 edge through one quarter, but a strong Hampton charge in the second period saw the Lady Bulldogs surge ahead. A 20-6 point differential in the second stanza staked Hampton to a halftime lead at 31-23.

Cloudland rallied in the third quarter as the Lady Landers erased the deficit. The waning minutes of the third stanza saw the teams trade the lead on multiple occasions. In the final quarter Hampton gained an advantage and was able to stave off several tying attempts from Cloudland to keep a narrow 2 to 4 point edge through most of the period. The Lady 'Dogs knocked down enough free throws in the final minute to hold off the Lander charge, winning by a 60-55 final score.

Mikki Oliver scored 18 points to lead Hampton on the night. Four Lady Landers registered double-figures in the game, led by Brittany Reese's 13 points and 11 points each from Brooke Johnson and Brooke Hughes.

The Lady Highlanders will be on the road for sub-state tournament play on Saturday evening. The Cloudland boys team is currently locked in a battle with the Junior Bucs of University High. UH leads Cloudland 20-12 after one quarter of action from Chuckey-Doak. We'll have a halftime score and updates momentarily.
8:05: It's halftime of the boys contest and University High leads 34 to 27.
9:00: The 'Landers are Regional Champs as the take the 64-61 victory over University High. A early run in the third quarter as the 'Landers withstood a late UH run. The 'Landers will now face Rockwood on Monday.

Appalachian Prepares for SoCon Tournament

The Appalachian State Mountaineers (12-17, 9-11 SoCon) will bring the curtain up on this year's Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in Chattanooga, TN with a 2 p.m. tipoff Friday against the Georgia Southern Eagles. ASU played the Eagles just once this season, reaching season highs in points and three-point percentage in a 95-82 Mountaineer win in Statesboro on February 2.

ASU enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed after losing the tiebreaker for the North’s third seed on Saturday to Samford. Appalachian is 36-35 all-time in the tournament and is 6-7 when playing as the No. 4 seed, although this year’s seeding system is different than in years
past. The Apps have advanced to the tournament semifinals three of the past four seasons, falling all three times. Should ASU win Friday's matchup with Georgia Southern, they will advance to the quarterfinals where they will play Davidson, the top seed from the North Division on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ASU faced the Wildcats just one time this season, a 70-52 setback at home on January 12.

Isaac Butts had his finest game of the year in the first matchup between the teams this season at Hanner Fieldhouse, as the big man grabbed 19 rebounds and scored 17 points, both career highs. Donald Sims scored a then career-high 29 points in the game with six three-pointers. Kellen Brand leads the team with 15.0 points per game and was named SCSMA second team all-conference. He has scored 20 or more points 10 times on the season, with a high of 31 against Western Carolina.

The Mountaineers had a string of two-straight division titles snapped this season, as a regular season finale loss dropped the team to the fourth seed for the tournament. Friday marks the fourth time Appalachian has faced Georgia Southern in the SoCon Tourney, as ASU holds a 2-1 advantage. The last post-season meeting was in the 2006 quarterfinals, as the Mountaineers took a 74-61 win.

Last season, the Apps had a short stay in Charleston for the SoCon tournament, as UNC Greensboro bounced the team in the first game. Appalachian is 7-3 all-time in the first round of the tournament.

His next tournament win will tie head coach Houston Fancher with Buzz Peterson for third in tournament wins, with eight.

Playing with just one senior on the roster after graduating five, the Mountaineers looked to fill several holes in the lineup with a young team. The Apps’ strength became apparent early on, as the squad owned the glass against nearly every opponent, and wrapped up the regular season with a league-best +7.6 rebounding margin. The combination of big men Isaac Butts and Josh Hunter proved to be a perfect complement to the sharp-shooting guards on the perimeter.

The duo accounted for all 14 of the team’s double-doubles on the season. ASU was second in the SoCon in three-point shooting at 37.2 percent and third in free throws at 70.5 percent.

Below is Friday's first round schedule for this year's tourney:

Session 1, Game 1: Appalachian State (4N) vs. Georgia Southern (5S) - 2 p.m.
Session 1, Game 2: Coll. of Charleston (3S) vs. UNC-Greensboro (6N) - 30 minutes after game 1
Session 2, Game 3: Wofford (4S) vs. Elon (5N) - 7 p.m.
Session 2, Game 4: Samford (3N) vs. Furman (6S) - 30 minutes after game 3

Tough Evening for Area Basketball Teams at Western Regionals

Teams from Western North Carolina had a hard time breaking through. Considering teams faced opponents which included a pair of defending state champions, WNC teams Mitchell, Robbinsville, Smoky Mountain, and Hiwassee Dam had an uphill climb.

Robbinsville, the squad that defeated the Avery Lady Vikings last Friday night, lost to defending 1A girls champ Bishop McGuinness by the final score of 54-29. Hiwassee Dam, entering tonight's game with a 28-5 record, met a buzzsaw in East Surry, losing to the Northwest 1A power by a final score of 52-36. Amber Boring scored 12 to lead Hiwassee Dam, and the school's all-time leading scorer Jenna Harris was a non-factor in the loss. East Surry and Bishop McGuinness, conference foes, with square off in Greensboro with a berth in the 1A state title on the line.

Meanwhile in the 2A girls Western regional, Smoky Mountain was unable to defeat a perennial power in East Davidson. East used an 18-1 first quarter differential to build an eventual 20-point victory and advance to the 2A Western regional title game. Their opponent would be the winner of the game between Mitchell and Salisbury. The Lady Mountaineers, led by junior Laken Norris, was looking to defeat a Lady Hornets club who advanced to the regional with a win last Friday in Jefferson against Ashe County.

Salisbury led the Lady Mountaineers 18-11 after one period and held a commanding 38-21 lead as Mitchell spark plug Norris found herself in foul trouble to hinder her effectiveness. The Lady Mountaineers opened the third quarter with a flurry and cut the lead to a dozen at 43-31 midway through the period as Norris came to life. Salisbury answered with a 5-0 run to close the quarter, however and lead 48-31 with eight minutes to play.

The Lady Hornets kept the foot on the pedal in the final period, opening up a commanding 20-point lead and eventually ending the Mitchell season with a 64-42 win. Congratulations to the Lady Mountaineers on another great season.

Salisbury and East Davidson will meet for a fourth time this season in the 2A Western Regional final. Men's action will pick up on Thursday.

Former Viking Athlete Realizes State Tournament Dream

Brandon Burleson was an accomplished wrestler at Avery County High School. The member of the Class of 1995 was a two-time Regional Qualifier in wrestling as a Viking, but was unable to reach the goal of wrestling at the state tournament.

His experiences as a grappler were an inspiration to pursue another field a number of years following graduation, continuing a career in high school wrestling as a referee. Last month, Burleson was nominated by his area wrestling officials association as one of only 24 referees statewide to officiate at this year’s NCHSAA state wrestling tournament, held at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem.

“My booking agent wanted to surprise me with the invitation. I received a letter from Mark Dreibilbis, the Assistant Executive Director of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, congratulating me on being chosen to officiate at the tournament,” Burleson remarked in an interview last week. “My booking agent then called to tell me he had a surprise for me. I asked him if it was that I had been chosen to officiate the state tournament, he said, “Yeah. How did you know?” and I told him I’d received the letter.”

Burleson has been a wrestling referee for seven years with the Northwestern Officials Association, and has officiated across the mountains and foothills for matches in Avery, Watauga, Caldwell, Catawba, Lincoln, Burke, and McDowell County. At the state finals, Burleson called matches in the 215-pound and heavyweight tournaments.

The opportunity for Brandon to officiate has served as an extension of sorts to a standout prep wrestling career. Burleson enjoys the action on the mat and feels blessed to be able to continue being part of the sport he loves, as well as the schedule flexibility that officiating allows.

“To stay involved in the sport is important to me. Being a wrestling coach takes up such a large amount of time, and I have all the respect in the world for high school coaches who do it. At first I thought about maybe coaching at a middle school level which might take up less time, but officiating has allowed me to be more selective in regard to my time and schedule and choosing which events to work,” Burleson explained. “I feel like in some way I’m giving back to the sport. Wrestling helped me a lot in life when it comes to discipline and things of that nature.”

Burleson wrestled at the 152 pound weight class as a student, and wrestled under Avery head coaches Hank Hardin and Sherman Andrews. The lessons he learned as a prep wrestler has served Brandon well as an official.

“I was a match from the state tournament in both my junior and senior years and lost in the regionals both years with the same official. I had sort of a bone to pick with how the matches were called, and I have never wanted a kid to lose a match because of me,” Burleson elaborated. “Now having been an official, I have a lot of respect for those who do it. Referees are human and they don’t always see everything, but the only thing you can do is call the best you can and try to call it as fairly as you can, hopefully without doing anything that might cause a kid to lose a match.”

Burleson has attended the state tournament a number of times, but the state tournament is a unique event to experience from the standpoint of officiating. “I had been on the floor at the state tournament when John Mark Bentley won his fourth state title, and I’ve atended the tournament almost every year since high school. The state tournament in itself is a neat, neat thing. Just watching the Parade of Champions itself as the wrestlers come to the floor for their championship matches is one of the most exciting and hair-raising events to experience first-hand,” Burleson added.

Although the event was an honor to Brandon, it wasn’t without its share of nervous moments.
“When I got ready on Friday for my first match, I was nervous because you don’t want to mess up or blow a call. They actually sat an official for a couple of matches because of a couple of mistakes, and you don’t want to be that guy that the whole state talks about,” Burleson said. “Our booking organization sent two referees, and my booking agent added a little pressure on me in telling me before the tournament that I was ready to do it, but don’t screw up.”

Brandon discussed the honor of having the opportunity to call alongside a number of veteran officials, including legendary referee Joe Jones, the state’s oldest official who has been part of the tournament for over 35 years and was the first official to suggest using the red and green wrist bands as part of the current wrestling scoring system used in North Carolina.

Burleson was observed and evaluated during his officiating at the state tournament, with people observing how referees determine falls and how efficient a referee calls his matches.
“Officials observe during the tournament and they want you to be as perfect as you can possibly be,” Brandon stated. “My booking agent contacted me and said that his first impression from the head of officiating was that everything went really smoothly, so he told me I must have done well.”

Due to his performance, Burleson may be invited to referee at the tournament again in future years, and he says he would be honored to officiate at the event if called upon. “I’d probably do the tournament again,” Brandon added. “I’m sure I wouldn’t be as nervous as I was this first time. I came to the realization that you just call like any other match. You call the matches as you see them.”

'Landers Move to Regional Title Game

The Cloudland Highlander boys team was victorious Monday night over Jellico by the final score of 77-58. The 'Landers advance to the Regional championship on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., where they will take on University High, who upset Hampton earlier this evening.

The Lady 'Landers will play at 6 p.m. against Hampton. Both games will take place at Chuckey Doak High School. Both teams have clinched sub-state berths, which will begin on Saturday.

Knights Check Mate Lady Vikings Season in 64-46 Loss

On Friday night in Big Red Country, the Lady Vikings welcomed the 24-2 Robbinsville Lady Knights as Avery hosted a sectional final for the third straight season.

Robbinsville defeated Highlands 77-35 to advance to the meeting with the Big Red. The two teams played to a standstill through two quarters, but the defensive pressure and the strategy of the Lady Knights paid dividends in a 64-46 win over the Lady Vikings to end the Avery season.

Both teams played the first eight minutes attempting to establish pace and style. Robbinsville drained three 3-point baskets in the quarter, while the Big Red relied on the scoring of starters Katie Ellis and Lauren Avery. The duo poured in ten of Avery’s 12 first-quarter points to take a one-point lead by quarter’s end.

The Lady Knights looked to leading scorer, 5’9” freshman guard Allison Beasley, to provide the offensive punch. Beasley hit a pair of three-pointers over the Lady Vikings zone defense and scored 11 points in all in the second stanza.

Avery countered with a balanced attack, as six different Lady Vikings scored points. Ellis scored a pair of baskets in the period, while teammate Sara Wiseman contributed with a pair of baskets off the bench. The pair, as well as teammate Katelynn Eudy was a strong presence in the paint, harassing Robbinsville shots and grabbing rebounds on both ends of the floor. The teams were tied at 28-28 at the end of the first half of play.

Avery made five more shots than Robbinsville for the half, but the five 3-point baskets allowed the Lady Knights to knot the score at intermission.

As the second half of play ensued, Robbinsville utilized a tight defense, continuously double-teaming Avery frontcourt players in the post while pressuring the backcourt to prevent easy passes and open shot opportunities.

The frontcourt duo of Ellis and Eudy accounted for all 18 of Avery’s second half points. Avery’s last lead of the ballgame came at the 3:43 mark of the third quarter as an Ellis inside basket put the Lady Vikings ahead 40-39.

In the second half, the Lady Vikings relied on its man-to-man defense to eliminate the perimeter shots, but Robbinsville closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, using the penetration of 5’2” sophomore guard Tacey Trammell to close the period and take control of the game, leading 46-40 with eight minutes remaining.

Robbinsville’s defense illustrated why the team had only lost two games all season, keeping the Lady Vikings scoreless for the first four and half minutes of the final stanza. In the meantime, the visitors slowly padded its advantage to double-digits. Avery could only get as close as 50-42 with just over three minutes remaining, but Trammell sank a three-point basket at the top of the key to build the lead back to double figures. Avery was only able to convert 3 of its 18 field goal attempts in the final quarter, and the Lady Knights hit 8 of 9 free throws in the final two minutes of play to ice the game and unfortunately end the Big Red season.

Ellis led the Vikings with yet another double-double, scoring 18 points with 16 rebounds in her final Avery game. Eudy added 14 points with 16 rebounds, but no other Avery player scored more than four points. Beasley’s 21 points led Robbinsville, with 13 from Trammell and eight from Eden Brown.

Avery shot 29 percent from the field for the contest, and was 0 for 6 from three-point range, while Robbinsville shot 35 percent and went 6 of 14 from beyond the arc.

Robbinsville was 18 for 22 from the free throw line, while Avery only shot four free throws for the entire contest, making two.
The Lady Vikings close the season with a 19-11 record and will lose three starters to graduation and four seniors overall.

Congratulations to the Big Red on a terrific season!

From the Dugout to the Diamond, Cranberry Middle School Begins Spring Sports Seasons

On a cool Thursday afternoon the county’s middle school sports seasons got underway as the Cranberry Wildcats opened up their baseball and softball seasons.

The Cranberry softball team and baseball squads traveled to Mitchell County for matchups against Harris Middle School.

Cranberry’s softball squad endured cool and soggy weather conditions as they fell in its season opener to the Lady Blue Devils by a 24-0 final score. Harris tallied six runs in bottom of the opening frame and was able to keep control of the contest through the contest which was shortened to four innings due to the conference’s ten-run rule.

The Lady Wildcats have a young group of players that will continue to learn and grow under the management of head coach Angel Dugger.

The Cranberry Wildcats baseball team took to the diamond for their season-opener at Mine Creek against the Harris Blue Devils. Despite allowing four unearned runs due to errors in the opening frame, the Wildcats clawed back into the contest but fell short in a 6-3 final score on Thursday evening.

Ian Franklin got the starting nod for the Wildcats, but the Cranberry defense suffered early inning jitters. Four errors in the bottom of the first contributed to four Harris unearned runs in the first inning. Harris added a fifth run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-0 advantage, but Franklin settled down to hold the Harris club scoreless through the rest of his outing.

The Wildcats in the meantime refused to give up, bouncing back with a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-1. Alex Barker walked to lead off the frame, and Jake Hinshaw belted an RBI triple to score Barker and put the Wildcats on the board.

The Blue Devils looked to put the game away in the bottom of the fifth when they scored an insurance run off reliever Stetson Stafford to lead 6-1, but Stafford worked out of a jam as he struck out a batter and induced another out to prevent further damage.

Despite the Wildcats registering a total of 12 strikeouts at the plate through six innings, the team believed in itself and stepped up in the top of the seventh with a strong rally.

As night fell on the diamond, Hunter Guinn and Zack Guy each drew walks, and Shea Buchanan singled to load the bases. Bryce Pittman and Stafford laced back-to back-RBI singles to drive in a pair of Wildcat runs to load the bases and cut the deficit to 6-3.

Cranberry had the potential go-ahead runner at the plate in the top of the seventh, but an Alex Barker line drive was snagged on a great play by the Harris shortstop to quell the rally and end the game.

In spite of the loss, Cranberry head coach Phillip Greene was pleased with his team’s play and sees great potential in this year’s squad. “I have a great group of seventh graders, and a group of eighth graders who are sound in the game of baseball,” Cranberry manager Phillip Greene remarked. “We had the early errors, but we’ve only had two weeks of practice, only getting on the field for three days before playing the first game. We had a number of young players who were playing their first middle school game but they did a good job recovering from those errors. They deserve a lot of credit in turning the game around.”

Cranberry starter Ian Franklin threw 82 pitches in four innings, striking out four Harris batters. “Ian gave up the five runs early on, and only one of them was earned through 4 innings,” Coach Greene added. “I may have pushed him further than I should have, but he wanted the ball for the fourth inning, so I sent him out and he pitched well.”

Stetson Stafford came on in relief, giving up only one run over two innings of work, striking out a pair of hitters. “Stetson did a great job throwing from the longer middle school distance,” Greene explained. “He had never thrown from that far before coming up from Little League. He started with a couple of little bobbles, but settled down and pitched his way out of a jam.”

Shea Buchanan battled through an illness to go 1 for 3 with an RBI base hit, while Stetson Stafford had a pair of hits and centerfielder Bryce Pittman was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and a walk in the contest.

Cranberry baseball is scheduled to travel to East Yancey early in the week, with a scheduled home game against Bowman on Thursday evening. Avery Middle School is preparing to begin its conference season within the next week as a number of changes to the team’s schedules have taken place within the past several days to push back the start of their respective seasons.
