Highlander Gameday: Doubleheader Highlights Evening of Regional Finals action


The Cloudland Highlander boys and girls teams are in action this evening at Chuckey Doak High School in Regional Championship action. The Cloudland Lady Landers will square off for the fourth time this season with the county rival Hampton Lady Bulldogs for the brass ring, while the Cloudland boys will tangle with the Buccaneers of University High in the boys title contest.
We'll be bringing you updates from tonight's contest LIVE throughout the evening as we follow the action from Chuckey-Doak High School.

7:55 PM - A great crowd from Carter County and beyond showed up at Chuckey-Doak High School for this evening's regional championship game between Hampton and Cloudland's girls squads. Cloudland came out strong to start the game, taking a 17-11 edge through one quarter, but a strong Hampton charge in the second period saw the Lady Bulldogs surge ahead. A 20-6 point differential in the second stanza staked Hampton to a halftime lead at 31-23.

Cloudland rallied in the third quarter as the Lady Landers erased the deficit. The waning minutes of the third stanza saw the teams trade the lead on multiple occasions. In the final quarter Hampton gained an advantage and was able to stave off several tying attempts from Cloudland to keep a narrow 2 to 4 point edge through most of the period. The Lady 'Dogs knocked down enough free throws in the final minute to hold off the Lander charge, winning by a 60-55 final score.

Mikki Oliver scored 18 points to lead Hampton on the night. Four Lady Landers registered double-figures in the game, led by Brittany Reese's 13 points and 11 points each from Brooke Johnson and Brooke Hughes.

The Lady Highlanders will be on the road for sub-state tournament play on Saturday evening. The Cloudland boys team is currently locked in a battle with the Junior Bucs of University High. UH leads Cloudland 20-12 after one quarter of action from Chuckey-Doak. We'll have a halftime score and updates momentarily.
8:05: It's halftime of the boys contest and University High leads 34 to 27.
9:00: The 'Landers are Regional Champs as the take the 64-61 victory over University High. A early run in the third quarter as the 'Landers withstood a late UH run. The 'Landers will now face Rockwood on Monday.
