Thanks for reading!

Update #9: High Point remains in control, leading 76-53 with 7:31 to play in the contest. ASU has been unable to get consistent stops on defense to put together a sizable scoring rally to cut into the Panthers' advantage. Jay Canty leads ASU with 19 points, with 18 points from John Brown and Allan Chaney to pace HPU.

Update #8: High Point leads 68-44 with 11:20 to play in the ballgame. A 9-3 scoring run by the Mountaineers has slightly cut into the Panthers lead, but the squad still has a long way to go.

Update #7: At the 15:16 mark in the second half, ASU is trailing big at 63-35 to an impressive Panthers team from High Point. The Big South Conference had better watch out for this club, as HPU plays hard on both ends of the floor. ASU, meanwhile, needs to regroup, as it has struggled shooting the basketball and its defense has had its share of difficulties matching up with a quick, athletic Panthers team.

Update #6: High Point leads ASU 48-26 at intermission. The first half has definitely been one to forget for the Mountaineers, as the Panthers have shot an astounding 65 percent from the floor for the first half to ASU's 33 percent clip. ASU has been outrebounded 17-14 for the first 20 minutes. Second half about to tip off from Boone!

Update #5: High Point has blitzed the Mountaineers, extending its lead to 46-19 with 1:43 to play in the first half thanks to another 11-2 scoring spurt. The Mountaineers are out of sync and have turned the basketball over with proficiency at the hands of the Panthers. HPU is 19 for 29 from the floor, mostly in the form of either three-pointers or slam dunks.

Update #4: With 5:15 to go, ASU takes a timeout after a 12-5 HPU scoring run to take a 35-18 lead. HPU is lighting up the scoreboard shooting from the floor.

Update #3: With 7:47 to play in the opening half, ASU trails HPU 23-13. John Brown (HPU) leads all scorers with 9 points. Jay Canty and Baskin each have four for the Mountaineers. ASU is shooting only 27 percent from the field, compared to 55 percent for the Panthers.

Update #2: High Point leads 13-9 at the 11:45 mark of the first half. Brown and Dejuan McGaughy have four points each for HPU, while ASU is paced by Tevin Baskin's four points.

Update #1: At the first media timeout, ASU trails High Point 4-2. John Brown has a bucket for HPU, while ASU has a Jay Canty basket. The early story is that ASU starting forward Nate Healy has picked up a pair of quick personal fouls and is relegated to the bench. ASU has made just one of its first eight shots from the floor.

Appalachian State University men's basketball (1-0) hosts High Point University (1-0) this evening in non-conference action.

ASU dominated Montreat 86-54 in its season-opener in Boone on Friday night, Nov. 9. Sophomore guard Tab Hamilton drained six three-pointers in the opening half to help the Mountaineers pull away to an early lead and never look back.

Freshman Frank Eaves scored 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench to aid in the Mountaineers' triumph.

High Point enters tonight's game also off an impressive win, defeating ASU's SoCon brethren UNC-Greensboro 81-73 last week to open its season. John Brown led High Point with 28 points in the victory.

ASU is 36-55 all-time against High Point, but has won each of the last two meetings. In the last meeting between the clubs, High Point overcame a 10-point deficit to tie the score with 34 seconds to play. ASU's Andre Williamson was fouled on ASU's ensuing possession and made one of his two free throws for a one-point edge. The Panthers misfired on a three-pointer as time expired to give ASU the 82-81 triumph.

ASU is seeking its fourth straight home victory dating back to last season, and is an impressive 111-52 since moving to the Holmes Center prior to the start of the 2000-2001 season. A win would be ASU's second 2-0 start in head coach Jason Capel's three seasons in Boone. Prior to Capel, the last coach to begin the season 2-0 with the Mountaineers was Houston Fancher during the 2005-06 season.

ASU has nine fresh faces added to this year's club, including Ashe County product Tommy Spagnolo, who transferred to Boone from Radford and chipped in with six rebounds and four points in the season-opening win over Montreat, as well as former Avery High School standout Dustin Clarke, who transferred from Hartford University. Due to NCAA rules, Clarke must sit out this season, but will suit up for the Black and Gold in 2013-14.

Tipoff from the Holmes Center is slated for 7 p.m. Check back around that time for game updates, news and notes that you can only get straight from courtside with The Avery Journal-Times!
