On Friday night, Cloudland traveled to Baileyton to take on the North Greene Huskies in a pivotal conference game. The Lady ‘Landers took the victory 44-33, while the ‘Landers came out on top 60-51.
In girls’ action, the Lady ‘Landers held North Greene to six first half points en route to the 44-33 victory. “We really worked on our defense and I think the kids have really bought in that we have to play better,” Lady ‘Lander coach Matt Birchfield stated. The win snapped the Lady ‘Landers two game losing streak, and gave them another key conference win. The Lady ‘Landers were led by Brooke Johnson’s 14 points and Rebekah Tolley’s 10 point performance. Shellie McKinney added 12 points and had six rebounds for the Lady ‘Landers.
In boys’ action, the ‘Landers full court defense gave the Huskies trouble all night as the ‘Landers rolled to a 60-51 victory. The ‘Landers had a combined 20 steals in the contest, and an 11-0 run in the second gave them the winning advantage. Randall Johnson led the ‘Landers with 17 points and five steals, while Logan Morgan scored 12 for the ‘Landers. Jordan Hughes added ten points, 10 assists, and seven steals for Cloudland.
Both Highlander teams will play two conference rivals this week. The Highlanders hosted Unaka on Tuesday night, and will travel to Hampton on Friday night. The Avery Journal-Times will have full recaps of those contests.
