Avery took a 14-point lead in the second quarter and never looked back in its 36-13 win over Robbinsville Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Colton Blackburn gained 158 yards rushing on 12 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Vikings rushed for 306 yards and gained 442 overall. Taylor Potter added 80 yards on just seven carries.
The Vikings (1-0) tied the game 7-7 when Alex Villanueva found Andy Gonzalez for a 4-yard touchdown pass, capping a 79-yard, seven-play drive. Potter added a 26-yard touchdown run and Villanueva scored on a 16-yard run to give the Vikings a 21-7 halftime lead.
Robbinsville (0-1) answered with a 17-yard Chris Daniels TD run in the third quarter, but the Vikings put the game away in the fourth with two touchdowns. Villanueva hit Gonzalez again, this time for a 38-yard scoring pass, and Blackburn scored his touchdown run with 2:15 left in the game to seal the victory. Gonzalez caught five passes for 60 yards, while Hunter Shields had three catches for 23 yards.
Villanueva connected on 11-of-21 passes for 136 yards and no interceptions.
Robbinsville finished with 232 yards in total offense, 203 of them on the ground. Knights quarterback Cassidy Galaviz completed just 3-of-11 passes for 29 yards with one interception.
C.J. Williams gained 103 yards on 15 carries for Robbinsville.
Avery looks for a second straight win next Friday night when it hosts the West Wilkes Blackhawks, who lost 21-7 against West Lincoln in their season opener Friday night.
