First, the East Wilkes Cardinals were shut out 5-0 on Monday evening against the Big Red, then on Tuesday night, the Lady Vikings of Avery blanked the North Wilkes Lady Vikings 7-0.
Avery scored quickly to open up the match as three minutes into the contest Katelynn Eudy scored as her shot ricocheted off a North Wilkes player into the net for an early 1-0 lead. The Big Red struck again less than 60 seconds later when Emily Banner scored off an assist from Rachel Buchanan to put the Lady Viking visitors up a pair.
In the 26th minute, Noelle Henline got in on the action, assisting on a goal for Buchanan to give the Big Red a three-goal edge. The Avery defense was stifling throughout the opening 40 minutes, as the North Wilkes club was fruitless in its efforts to possessing the ball for long stretches in its offensive half of the field. Avery keeper Cailan Calloway saw her first shot in goal early in the second half of play, a testament to the Lady Vikings' ability to control the contest.
The Big Red scored its first tally of the second half ten minutes in, as Banner scored her second goal of the game, this time off an assist from Smith. Banner would earn a hat trick a few short minutes later as Megan Robbins provided the helper for the shot, pushing the Avery advantage to 6-0.
Avery's final score of the night came as Buchanan provided a second assist for the game, this one to Smith for Mary Chesnut's sixth goal of the young season and the team's seventh for the contest at the 60th minute.
Calloway again did not allow a goal during her time in net, and Avery's coaches chose to substitute a number of reserves for the final 20 minutes of the match. Calloway was replaced in goal by Mary Chesnut Smith, and Calloway switched into the field to finish the match. Smith made a save off a free kick following an Avery foul in the 73rd minute, preserving the shutout.
The win improved Avery's record to 2-0-1 on the season, and the squad played without the services of Hayley Pyatte, as well as senior Kasey Brown, who is out a week with a knee injury. The Big Red will return to MacDonald Stadium on Friday night to host Ashe County.
