The Avery Lady Vikings earned its first victory of 2009 with a decisive 5-0 win over East Wilkes.
The Big Red got on the board late in the first half on a goal from Mary Chesnut Smith. The tally would be one of four total goals on the night for the sophomore.
Hayley Pyatte scored Avery's second goal off a shot from Katelynn Eudy that was deflected away by the Lady Cardinals keeper. The tally just five minutes into the second half of action helped Avery build a 2-0 advantage.
Smith reeled off three consecutive goals over the course of the final 35 minutes of play to impressively cap the shutout. Cailan Calloway was again sterling in goal in earning her first shutout of the season.
Avery's soccer week continues with a trip to Hays, NC to tangle with the Lady Vikings of North Wilkes before returning to the friendly confines of MacDonald Stadium on Friday night to host the Ashe County Lady Huskies. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
