Another goal from Watauga with less than one second remaining gives the Lady Pioneers the two-score triumph.
A tough non-conference loss to swallow for the Big Red, as both teams played a strong match. Watauga played well in earning the win, its 7th on the season. Well played match by both clubs.
Avery's overall record drops to 6-3-1 overall.
7:35 PM -- In the 79th minute, Kendyl Baird gets free in the Avery zone and slips a shot past the Viking keeper for a 1-0 lead. Only 1:47 officially remains in the match and the Pioneers break through.
7:22 PM - 15 minutes left to play in the match and we're still scoreless in this defensive struggle. Avery has had a couple of runs on goal but has been unable to get a shot past the Lady Pioneers keeper. Mercedes Bentley has been stout in goal for the Lady Vikings thus far.
6:45 PM -- At halftime, the teams are scoreless. Both teams have had a couple of scoring opportunities with no success. Quick break between halves before the next 40 minutes are set to begin.
6:26 PM -- Halfway through the first half and we are still scoreless. The Lady Pioneers are employing a four-player defensive front that is making it challenging for the Big Red to penetrate. Good soccer out on the pitch so far.
6:10 PM -- Both squads have direct kicks on goal in the first seven minutes of the match, but neither team could cash in. Avery's Mary Chesnut Smith's kick hit the right post from about 25 yards out, but the match remains scoreless.
The Avery Lady Vikings host the Watauga Lady Pioneers in a friendly border battle tonight at MacDonald Stadium.
Avery stands at 6-2-1 on the season, looking to build off its impressive 10-0 win over Mountain Heritage on Wednesday night.
