Lightning cut short last Friday night's varsity football game in Robbinsville, but it was the Avery offense that provided the sparks as the Vikings steamrolled past the West Wilkes Blackhawks 54-27 at Blackhawk Stadium in Miller's Creek Friday night.
Avery quarterback Alex Villanueva accounted for over 400 yards of total offense as Avery raced to a 14-0 lead. West cut the lead to as close as 21-20 in the second quarter, but Avery extended the advantage to 34-27 at halftime.
The second half story was the Avery defense, who held West scoreless and was a frequent visitor in the BlackHawk backfield, delivering shot after shot to West quarterback Logan Hallock. The Viking offense maintained momentum with 20 points in the second half to pull away for the squad's first victory of 2009.
